Moving company advertising: where to advertise and the rules that apply

Moving company advertising is every place you pay to put your name in front of people who are about to move: search ads, social ads, your own trucks, print, and sponsorships. Search ads catch people who are already looking. The rest reach people before they search, so that your name is the one they recognize when they do. This page covers the channels beyond Google search and the rules every mover’s advertising has to follow.

Moving Company SEO is an independent referral service, not a marketing agency. When you send the form, your details go to an independent marketing agency that prepares any proposal and does any work.

Search ads first

For many movers, the first advertising dollars go to Google: Local Services Ads, paid per lead, and search ads, paid per click. They reach people at the moment they search for a mover. The Google Ads for moving companies guide covers both in full. The channels below are what you add once search is working.

Facebook and Instagram ads

Meta’s ads can reach people in your area before they search. For a mover, they suit a few jobs well:

  • Keeping your name in front of people in your area, with photos and short videos of real crews at work.
  • Promoting a service people may not know you offer, such as packing or storage.
  • Reaching people who visited your site and did not ask for a quote.
  • Recruiting crew members, which is advertising too.

Send every ad to a page that matches it, with a quote form, not to your home page. And keep the ad account in your company’s name.

Your trucks are advertising

A moving truck is seen on every street it drives down. A clean, readable truck with your name and website keeps working every day it is on the road. For an interstate mover, the name on the truck, the website and the paperwork should match the name on the USDOT registration; ask a lawyer whether truck lettering counts as an advertisement under the federal rule. Keep the design simple: the name, what you do, and how to reach you, readable from across a street.

Door hangers after a job in a neighborhood, cards left with customers, and listings in local guides still have a place, especially for local movers. So do partnerships with people who meet movers’ customers first: real estate agents, property managers, building staff and storage operators. Two points to keep in mind:

  • If you pay or reward a partner who then recommends you publicly, for example in a post or a review, the FTC expects that connection to be disclosed clearly and conspicuously.
  • A printed piece that promotes your services is advertising too. For interstate movers, the federal rule asks for the registered name and the U.S. DOT number in all advertisements.

The rules every mover’s advertising follows

Truthful, straightforward and honest

Under 49 CFR 375.207, interstate household goods movers are told: “You and your agents must publish and use only truthful, straightforward, and honest advertisements.” All advertisements must include the name or trade name as on the USDOT registration and the U.S. DOT number. That covers search ads, social ads and print, and the rule requires your agents to include both as well. Ask a lawyer whether an agency or a lead seller that advertises for you counts as an agent under the rule. The article on the USDOT number in your ads explains the rule.

Endorsements and influencers

The FTC’s endorsement guides apply to any ad that uses a customer, an employee or an influencer to recommend you. Unexpected material connections, such as payment, a free or discounted move, employment or family ties, must be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. A disclosure hidden behind a link or only in the comments is not enough. The guides also say an advertiser may be liable for a deceptive endorsement even when the endorser is not, and that advertising agencies may be liable for their roles in creating or spreading endorsements they know or should know are deceptive.

No invented claims

Claims like “lowest prices” or “never a scratch” are easy to write and hard to defend. Plain statements about how you work, what you offer and where you go are safer and often more convincing.

Measuring what advertising brings

Every channel should be counted by the quote requests and booked moves it produces. Use separate landing pages or forms for each channel, ask new customers how they found you, and compare channels by what it costs to win a job. Drop what does not pay, and put the money where it does.

To get a written proposal for your moving company’s advertising, send the form. Asking is free and you never have to hire anyone.

Questions movers ask

How do I advertise my moving company?

Start with Google: Local Services Ads and search ads. Then add Facebook and Instagram ads, your trucks, print and partners. Count every channel by the moves it books.

Do Facebook ads work for movers?

They can reach people in your area before they search, and suit packing, storage and retargeting ads. No one can promise results; measure the quote requests each ad brings.

Does my USDOT number need to be on my truck ads and flyers?

For interstate household goods movers, 49 CFR 375.207 says all advertisements must include the registered name and the U.S. DOT number. Ask a lawyer about your own case.

Can I pay an influencer to recommend my moving company?

You can, but the FTC expects the payment or free move to be disclosed clearly and conspicuously in the post itself.
